Calculating Increase Of Ship's Draft Due To Bilging

Today I'm going to answer this question this question submitted from our reader.  This is about an increase of ship's draft due to bilging.

Can you please show me the solution of this problem: a box-shaped vessel 60 meters long,11 meters wide with a depth of 8 meters has an empty amidship compartment 12 meters long. the vessel is on an even keel 3.80 meters. calculate the increase in draft if the compartment is bilged.

Given:

60 m = ship's lenght overall
11 m = beam
8 m = depth
12 m = lenght of compartment
3.80 m = draft

Find:

Ship's increase in draft due to bilging.

Solution:

l = compartment lenght
L = ship's lenght
B = ship's beam
D = draft

Increase in draft = (l x B x D) / (LxB)-(lxB)
                              = (12 x 11 x 3.80) / (60 x 11) - (12 x 11)
                              = (501.6) / (660 - 132)
                              = 501.6 / 528
                              = 0.95 m is the increase in draft due to bilging
