Solving For ETA And LZT Of Arrival

You are on a voyage from New York, USA to San Francisco, USA. The distance from pilot to pilot is 5,132 miles. The speed of advance is 13.5 knots. You estimate 32 hours of bunkering at Colon and 14 hours for the Panama Canal transit. If you take the departure of 0600 hours (ZD +4) on May 16, what is your ETA (ZD +7) at San Francisco.

Given:

           Distance = 5, 132 miles
               Speed = 13.5 knots
         Bunkering = 32 hours
Panama Transit = 14 hours
  LZT Departure = 0600 16th May

Solution:

              LZT departure = 0600 16th May
                ZD departure = (+)4 (W) +            (E – / W +)
            GMT departure = 1000 16th May
          + Steaming Time = 2009 15days      (Steaming Time: always + )
                GMT arrival = 3009 31st May
                   ZD arrival = (+)7 (W) –         (E + / W –)
                 LZT arrival = 2309 31st May
                   Bunkering = 32 +                 (Any Delays: always +)
 Panama Canal Transit = 14 +                 (Any Delays: always +)
                 LZT arrival = 2109 02nd June is the final answer

    1. you divide the distance by the speed. 5132/13.5=380.1481481. this is the steaming time in hours. divide this by 24 to get the number of days.15.83950617(days). multiply .83950617 by 24 to get the number of hours = 20.14814815(hours)then multiply .14814815 by 60 to get minutes = 8.888 or 9. i hope this helps.

  2. Wait. In the GMT arrival= 3009 31st of May, shouldn't that 30 hours be subtracted to 24 hrs because there are 24hrs in 1 day. So, that makes 30-24=6 hrs and since it exceeds 24 hrs, 31st becomes 32nd and minus it to 30 because there are 30 days in June, so, June 02. Or am i wrong?

    1. month may are consist of 31 days you have to subtract it in order to remove the month of may. the remaining days will be the day of the following month which is june.therefore, 1st day of june is the next date after the removal of the 31 days
