If a ship of 15,000 tons deadweight fitted with steam turbine has an astern power of 60,000 knot-tons, what is the speed of the ship?

Given:

   Deadweight = 15,000 tons
Astern Power = 60,000 knot-tons

What is asked:

Speed of the ship

Solution:

            Speed = Astern Power  ÷ (1/3)
                               Speed
                       = 60,000 knot-tons  ÷ (1/3)
                           15,000 tons 
                       = 4 knots ÷  1 
                                          3
            Speed = 12 knots
