A ship sails from Lat. 30° 20’ S and steams going south
(180) for a distance of 180 miles. What is her arrival latitude?
Given:
Latitude
30° 20’ S
Distance
= 180 miles
What is asked?
Arrival
latitude
Solution:
1.
Divide the distance by 60 to convert it into degrees.
The result will be our Dlat.
180 ÷ 60 = 3°
So the difference of latitude (dlat) is 03° 00’ S. The dlat is named south because the ship steams
going south.
2. Add
the dlat and the latitude of departure (L1).
L1 = 30° 20’ S
+
Dlat = 03° 00’ S
L2 = 33° 20’ S is the arrival latitude
