Determine The List Of The Vessel

A load of 75 tons is lifted from a distance of 50 feet from the ship centerline. The displacement including the cargo is 6,000 tons and has a GM of 6 feet. Determine the list of the vessel while the cargo is held on suspension.

Given:

Displacement = 6,000 tons
       Distance = 50 ft
          Weight = 75 tons
               GM = 6 ft

What is asked?

Angle of  list

Solution:

This is the formula in getting the degree of ship's list
Tan List = Weight × Distance    
                 Displacement × GM
Tan List = 75 tons × 50 ft     
                 6,000 tons × 6 ft
Tan List = 3,750 ft/tons
                36,000 ft/tons 
       List = arc tan 0.10416
       List = 5.94 degrees
